Leicester City defender Ashleigh Plumptre earned her call-up to the Nigerian National team after she trained with them for the first time on Saturday in Austria.

The 23-year old combative defender, who has already played for England at youth level, recently decided to pledge her allegiance to the Super Eagles of Nigeria and has thus joined the players who are training ahead of the Aisha Buhari Cup that will take place in September.

The six-nation invitational tournament is organized in honour of Nigeria’s first lady and it will serve as preparation for the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ghana, slated to take place in October.

Plumptre, who was voted Leicester City’s player of the season in 2020/21 after helping the Foxes win the FA Women’s Championship title, is eligible to play for Nigeria as her father is of Nigeria descent.

Speaking with BBC sport Africa, she said:

The idea of me being able to play for Nigeria, with that being an option, I would happily grab that with both hands
