DJ Big N said this via a post on his Twitter page on Monday, the 31st of May 2021. He stated that he understands African music being grouped under the same umbrella of afrobeats when there was no structure but times have changed. He went on to give examples of songs like “Roju” by Chike and “Felony” by Ckay which should not be grouped under Afrobeats but as a sub-genre. He is also of the opinion that when this is done, a lot of artists will be able to grow their fanbases better. In his words;

Yes the African music industry was formed with little or no structure. But at this stage, Afrobeats needs sub genres. How can Chike’s Roju or Ckays Felony and Naira Marley’s Coming be all called Afrobeat?? There will be more Kings/Queens if we sub grouped them thus more fan base.
