I think (may be right or wrong) we are entering the Golden Age of HipHop in Nigeria where hiphop will actually begin to sell. I used to be a "head," then I came to understand that mass appeal – if that is what is hoped for, and most heads wish the masses could appreciate the genre so I'd say it is – requires melody, for instance. The typical head retort is that it's all about the lyrics, but the dispassionate reality is that the lyrics… aren't that damn special. Complex rhyme schemes are cute, but the content is typically banal ("I'm great." "We're dope."), and lacking the polished veneer of pop production to spice things up, it's really not worth listening to.
I'm sure there were some "dope lyrics" delivered by this assembly, but a minute in I was bored. When I was 14 and there was a lot less competition for my time, I could afford to fritter away hours listening to gruff declarations of superiority over "sucka MCs." At 30? I. Just. Don't. Give. A. Fuck.
